How Real Madrid outclassed Manchester United to win UEFA Super Cup

Real Madrid ended the 2016/17 season with the UEFA Champions League title and have now started the 2017/18 season with the UEFA Super Cup title.

Zinedine Zidane‘s side came close to taking the lead in the 16th minute when Casemiro‘s header beat David De Gea but bounced off the crossbar.

The Brazilian midfielder would not be denied for long, though, sliding to meet Dani Carvajal‘s lofted pass to score in the 24th minute.

Isco then gave the dominant Spanish and European champs a 2-0 lead by the 52nd minute in Macedonia’s capital, Skopje.

Man. United’s new striker, Romelu Lukaku, pounced on a rebound from Nemanja Matic‘s shot to pull a goal back in the 62nd minute.

And it gave the Europa League holders the boost to stage a late fightback, but Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini were denied by Madrid’s Keylor Navas.

Madrid came close to scoring a third through Gareth Bale who saw a powerful shot crash off the United crossbar.

Cristiano Ronaldo, making his first appearance since the FIFA Confederations Cup semis, then blazed a late free-kick over as the Spanish side held on for a 2-1 win.

Next up for Real Madrid is the Spanish Super Cup first leg on Sunday, August 13, away at arch-rivals, Barcelona with the return leg holding three days later at the Bernabeu.

Manchester United meanwhile kick-off their Premier League season on Sunday at home to London side, West Ham United.
